The Plan
The reading plan was developed with the following characteristics:
- Each day's readings will usually take about 20 minutes
- The Old Testament will be read through once, while the New Testament will be read through twice (once slowly, once more quickly)
- Each day will have readings from two streams:
- The main stream will go through the Old Testament (minus the Psalms) and then the New Testament at about 3-4 chapters a day
- The second stream will go through one chapter of the New Testament each day (for 260 days) and then the Psalms for the rest of the year
- There is only a three week period in which readings will be exclusively from the Old Testament
- The main stream will go through the Pentateuch / Job first, then through the historical books chronologically. Readings from the historical books will be punctuated by readings from the prophets and wisdom literature according to when these books were believed to have been written (times are based on those provided in the Bible Timeline series by Jeff Cavins)
- Because chapters vary in length quite substantially, the number of chapters read each day was determined by the number of verses in each chapter, so as to keep the amount of daily readings as consistent as possible (137 verses being the typical max).
- We will start on Advent Sunday (Nov. 29th) and we will end on Advent Sunday 2021 (assuming the schedule is adhered to)
The Reason
"...sacread tradtion...and Sacred Scripture of both the Old and New Testaments are like a mirror in which the pilgrim Church on earth looks at God, from whom she has received everything, until she is brought finally to see Him as He is, face to face (see 1 John 3:2)" - DEI VERBUM (7)
To love God necessarily drives us into a deeper longing to know Him. The reading and study of Sacred Scripture is a pre-eminent means of knowing Him more deeply, as well as knowing ourselves more as we see ourselves in the context of our shared biblical story.
The opportunity of reading through Scripture together provides the benefit of mutual encouragement and inspiration, as the task is no small one.
The Site
By Sunday this site will - in its initial phase - allow each of us to:
- See the scheduled readings for the day
- Read through the readings for the day (the text will be available here mainly for more hectic days)
- Mark off each chapter read so that we can easily keep track of our progress
Later on, the site will add the ability to push the end date out a day at a time. Finishing on schedule is not of highest importance, and rather than be overwhelmed by dozens of outstanding chapters on the day's reading, we will be able to push back the end date when we need to. For those determined to stay on the schedule, I'd recommend carving out a dedicated time each week to catch up when it is needed (on a Sunday afternoon, for example).
A section to post comments will also be available, whether they be private of for everyone.
Depending on how many of us there are, there is also the possibility of meeting every so often to reflect on what we've read together thus far.
